Swimming Lake Ontario – the long way

Five women are set to jump into Lake Ontario this morning to try something that’s never been done before: swim the length of the lake.

Colleen Shields, Mona Sharari, Nicole Mallette, Rebekah Boscariol and Samantha Whiteside range in age from 18 to 61.

They’ve all done long distance swims before. Four of the five have crossed Lake Ontario using the traditional 52 kilometre stretch between Niagara-on-the-Lake and Toronto.

This time they’ll spell each other off in a 305-kilometre relay against the current and the wind as they swim from Kingston to Burlington’s Spencer Smith Park. The journey is expected to take five days.
