Suspect arrested in Scarborough senior sex assault

The suspect in a brutal attack on a 61-year old woman at a Scarborough cemetery has made his first court appearance, since being taken into custody Wednesday.

Russell Kirkpatrick, 44, made a brief appearance Thursday morning.  He’s facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated sexual assault.  

Toronto police say the victim was visiting her mother’s grave Monday night when she was dragged off a paved path, beaten and sexually assaulted.  Investigators add she was left  unconscious and undetected for several hours.

Police are expected to say more about the arrest Thursday afternoon.

Kirkpatrick remains in custody.  He’ll be back in court next Monday.
