The City of Hamilton will be closing King Street East from John Street to Gage Avenue Sunday for the annual Open Streets Hamilton event.

The pedestrian-friendly event will transform one of the city’s thoroughfares into a walkable community space from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Open Streets Hamilton was designed to promote physical activity, environmental sustainability and social inclusion.

“Activity hubs” will be placed at seven locations along the street: near John Street, Ferguson Station near Ferguson Ave. South, in between Wellington Street and Victoria Avenue, near Wentworth Avenue Street, at the Kitchen Collective Food Court near Farleigh Avenue, near Sherman Avenue, and at the Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre.

Multiple businesses along the road will also be participating, with events and activities being offered.

Pride in the Village will be held at Ferguson Station, featuring a queer maker’s market, and drag performances.

The road will be closed to motor vehicle traffic, with these streets available for drivers to cross the road:

  • John Street
  • Wellington Street
  • Victoria Avenue
  • Wentworth Street
  • Sanford Avenue
  • Sherman Avenue
  • Gage Avenue

Hamilton Street Railway transit will be making detours around the event, which can be found on the official HSR website here.

Emergency services and DARTS will not be affected.
