Stolen truck rams into Niagara cop cruiser, driver flees from police

Niagara police are investigating after a stolen truck rammed into a police cruiser before fleeing the scene in Welland.

Police received reports that a driver and passenger were showing “physical signs of being impaired” inside a white GMC Sierra truck in a parking lot near King St. and Kent St. around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Officers located the truck in a different parking lot in the area of Prince Charles Dr. and Lincoln St.

Police learned the truck was stolen and the first officer on scene attempted to block in the vehicle.

“The truck rammed the fully marked cruiser and forced its way out of the lot,” said police in a news release. “Officers very quickly discontinued any pursuit out of a concern for public safety.”

Video captured of the incident and posted on Twitter appears to show the truck repeatedly reversing into the police SUV. It then successfully pushes the police cruiser backward and the truck is able to flee the parking lot.

The truck was last seen heading west on Lincoln St. near Riverside Dr.

Niagara police say no officers were injured during the incident.

There was minor damage to the police SUV.
