A Mississauga man has been charged after officers responding to a suspicious vehicle call on west Hamilton Mountain on Sunday found a stolen car and recovered a loaded firearm.

Police were called to Elodia Court shortly after 3 a.m. following a witness report that a car had stopped in the neighbourhood.

The vehicle was identified to be a stolen auto on file with Peel police.

As officers attempted to investigate, a male driver rammed a police cruiser and attempted to flee. He continued driving along the court and struck a second police car, making both cruisers inoperable.

The man then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers pursued him and an arrest was made a short distance away.

Police say that he continued to resist arrest after being taken into custody and refused to identify himself.

During a search of the car officers found a semi-automatic pistol, also known as a Glock handgun.

The accused was later identified as Sammy Shaik, 28, of Mississauga, who was charged with several offences, including possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, dangerous operation of a vehicle, possession of a weapon obtained by crime and disguise with intent.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Const. David Turnbull at 905-546-8965.

Anonymous tips can be called in to Hamilton Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submitted online.
