A 29-year-old man is in custody after taking a six hour long joyride in an ambulance, beginning in Waterloo region and ending just south of Wasaga Beach.

Waterloo Regional Police told CHCH News the man had been standing near the ambulance bay outside of Cambridge Memorial Hospital. A paramedic was also nearby but when distracted the man got into the vehicle and took off with the emergency lights on.

Police were able to find the ambulance travelling on Hespeler Road and continued to follow it from a safe distance.

The suspect continued onto Highway 401, driving the ambulance into Halton Region where OPP took over the chase into Peel and York Region, and then into Dufferin and Simcoe county.

The suspect, who has no fixed address, was arrested without incident and has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor-vehicle, possession of stolen property and flight from police.

The ambulance is being returned to Waterloo Regional Police headquarters.
