Statistics Canada is reporting that employment edged down in January by point-one per cent and the employment rate decreased 0.1 percentage points to 60.8 per cent.
The unemployment rate fell by 0.3 percentage points to 6.5 per cent, as fewer people searched for work.
StatCan says job losses were largely with private sector and part-time positions and that they were mostly concentrated with women aged 24 to 54.
Among this demographic, employment fell by 0.4 per cent.
There was little employment change among the other major demographic groups.
