One day after learning that convicted killer Karla Homolka is raising a family in a town southwest of Montreal, St.Catharines residents are shocked. Homolka and her then husband Paul Bernardo devastated the city and shocked the country after they tortured and murdered Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffey.
Homolka, who legally changed her name to Leanne Teale, served 12 years in a Quebec prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter for her role in the murders. Most people haven’t seen her since she was spotted waiting at a bus stop in Montreal almost ten years ago.
It appears the convicted killer is raising a family in the Chateauguay neighbourhood and makes daily trips to a local school to pick up and drop off her children. Centennial Park elementary school did not confirm if Homolka’s children go to the school, but the board did release a letter to parents reassuring them that their children are safe.
Homolka was released without conditions in 2005. Residents of St.Catharines say her children shouldn’t be paying for their mother’s crime.
“It’s not the kids fault, but I personally wouldn’t want anything to do with her or my family to do anything with her.”
