Sleeping Giant is a Canadian drama written and directed by Andrew Cividino. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year in the International Critics’ Week and stars a rookie cast of young actors including Jackson Martin, Reece Moffett, and Canadian Screen Award winner Nick Serino.

Teenager Adam is spending his summer vacation with his parents on rugged Lake Superior. His dull routine is shattered when he befriends Riley and Nate, smart aleck cousins who pass their ample free time with debauchery and reckless cliff jumping. The revelation of a hurtful secret triggers Adam to set in motion a series of irreversible events that test the bonds of friendship and change the boys forever.

“The setting of this film is in every fibre of my being! It’s my favourite place on earth and has been since I formed my very first memories there,” Cividino says of the Thunder Bay, Ontario area, where he encountered similar kids as his characters in the film. “I’d pretend I could fit in with these kids who were forces of nature. They were at one with this landscape and would do the most reckless, crazy things. That’s how they’d pass their time and for me, trying to be accepted by these guys who exuded ‘man’, I felt like a little boy trying to tag along. Those summers up there with them, learning how to become like them, that left an indelible mark on me and something I definitely wanted to capture with the movie.”

Sleeping Giant is rated 14A.
