Six Nations Cannabis Cup returns to Oshweken with food drive

Saturday was the Cannabis Cup, a marijuana competition that brings the many dispensaries from across Six Nations territory together for a day of fun in the sun, and some friendly competition.

The Six Nations Cannabis Cup is back in Ohsweken this time, with more music, more food, and of course more cannabis.

“We’re just having a good time, meeting prospective customers, mingling, having fun and just getting to know what the cannabis industry on the rez is all about,” says John Williams from Six Greenz Dispensary.

Over the years, the marijuana industry has boomed across the region and has become a major part of the local economy.

“Everything that we try to do here is try to give back, try to bring people together with our natural medicines, and we’re having a great day here celebrating how far we’ve come in the cannabis industry,” says Mike Davis, the organizer of the cup.

But the cannabis cup is more than just an excuse to twist one up, it’s a chance to give back.

“Community is our number one priority here, we have a food bank raffle draw as well, so if you bring some canned goods you might get put into that raffle draw and win something nice there,” Davis says.

Speaking of food, there were a number of local bites to try out — but one in particular caught our eye.

“We do Texas-style BBQ with a bit of a native-cuisine twist, we use some of our traditional ingredients in our baked beans and try to do everything from scratch,” says Cullen Brinklow, the owner of Smokey Mohawk.

“I was up until about 3 am last night, smoking everything but today is essentially a big holding oven. I did a bunch of briskets, pulled pork and I’ve got our beans on this side. That’s kind of our signature thing, is our beans.”

This year featured a number of musical acts, from Mickey Avalon to Mr. Sauga and Hamilton’s Brian Melo.

“Mike Davis reached out to me, and I was a part of the first one and you can already see it expanded and growing, and the community coming together and he reached out to me just a few weeks ago and I was available so here we are,” Melo says.

Throughout the day, attendees will vote on their favourite dispensaries to win prizes, and one will take home the title prize, the cannabis cup.
