Woman found dead in Hamilton police custody, SIU investigating

Ontario’s top police watchdog is investigating after a 31-year-old woman died early Tuesday morning while in Hamilton police custody.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says the woman was taken into police custody Monday in relation to multiple failure to comply offences. She was taken to central station and put in a cell.
According to the SIU, she showed signs of being in medical distress around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday and paramedics were called. The woman was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Hamilton Police Service has not released the woman’s name or suspected cause of death, as the SIU investigation is ongoing.
