The province’s police watchdog has cleared two Niagara police officers after a deadly fire last summer in Vineland.
The Special Investigations Unit says the officers couldn’t have stopped a son who set his mother on fire last July 5th. The officers heard screams coming from a home on Epp Street and found a 50-year old man inside standing beside his 73-year old mother in a wheelchair. It was Anne and her son Karl Schmidt. In a matter of seconds, Karl ignited gasoline that had been poured in the room.
One of the officers tried to rescue the woman but was badly burned when he slipped and fell.
