Police say last week’s shooting at a house in Hamilton’s east end was not a random break and enter.

Officers were called to the home on Avondale St. near Barton St. around 10:30 p.m. Thursday for reports of a break in.

Upon their arrival, police say a 65-year-old man allegedly walked out of the home with his hands in the air and said, “I’m the shooter”. The man was arrested by police at the scene.

Officers who were at a local hospital for an unrelated matter saw a 24-year-old man walk in to the emergency room and tell the staff he had been shot. The officers went over and questioned the man and found out that he was shot at the Avondale address.

An investigation into the incident revealed that the senior and man knew each other. Police say the man went to the home and got into an altercation with the senior. The man tried to force his way inside and was shot by the homeowner.

The 65-year-man has been charged with aggravated assault, discharge firearm with intent, unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless use of a firearm, and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Police have charged the 24-year-old man from Hamilton with break and enter.
