While everyone was busy focusing their attention on the Toronto International Film Festival, some of the year’s biggest movies hit Blu-Ray and DVD.
Furious 7

This high octane sequel kicked off the summer movie season and kept rolling over records month after month. It is currently this year’s second highest grossing film behind Jurassic World, and the fifth highest grossing film ever. Now its home video release has broken another record. Pulling in $52.5 million so far in physical and digital sales, the film is the highest grossing live action release of the year.

With the success of last year’s Maleficent and Cinderella this year, it’s full steam ahead for Disney and their plan to make live action adaptations of their classic films. Next year we’ll see their take on The Jungle Book (the Jon Favreau directed one, not Andy Serkis’), plus a new Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland and the revival of Pete’s Dragon. The Blu-Ray release of Cinderella includes 40 minutes of special features including the short film Frozen Fever.
Monkey Kingdom

Since 2007 disney has been releasing documentary film under their Disneynature banner. This year’s instalment, Monkey Kingdom, followed a family of monkeys living in the jungles of Sri Lanka and was narrated by Tina Fey. The home video release includes 3 featurettes outlining the film’s production, as well as a music video of “It’s Our World” performed by Jacquie Lee.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show 40th Anniversary

The pop culture phenomenon that is The Rocky Horror Picture Show has gotten a new Blu-Ray release to celebrate its 40th anniversary. The amazing thing is that the film is technically still playing in limited release to this day, making it the longest running theatrical release in film history. This release includes both the U.S. and U.K. versions of the film, audio commentary, featurettes, the time warp music video (above), and many more special features.
