The Selfish Giant

The Selfish Giant is a British film loosely based off of an Oscar Wilde short story of the same name. The film centres on two working-class boys, Arbor (Connor Chapman) and his best friend Swifty (Shaun Thomas), who run into trouble and are expelled from their school. They fall into the scrapping business under the watch of a strange man and local criminal named Kitten (Sean Gilder). Using a horse-drawn cart, the boys search the city for junk and cables for Kitten to turn a profit on. However, as the saying goes, more money, more problems, leading to a tragic event that has consequences for everyone involved.

Director Clio Bernard always wanted to make an adaptation of the Wilde short about a giant keeping children out of his garden. She found her inspiration in a scrappy boy that would frequent the school set of her 2010 film The Arbor. The Selfish Giant won the Europa Cinemas award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and won Best Film at the Stockholm Film Festival last November.

The Selfish Giant is rated 14A.
