There have been a significant number of trespassers snooping around the former GM plant in St. Catharines. It’s becoming a real nightmare for security who have spotted 40 different people illegally on the property over the last six months. They come in and steal metals like copper and estimate the value of lost property up to tens of thousands of dollars.
The property is now owned by Bayshore Groups, it’s being demolished to make way for a mix of retirement residences, apartment lofts, businesses and more. Many people have been sneaking in and engaging in other illegal activities like painting graffiti and lighting fires. They’re using the trail system by 12 Mile Creek which is currently closed to the public.
They’ve installed a number of cameras all around the property, most of which are monitored 24 hours a day and security is sending those photos to police. A trespassing ticket will cost you $65 per offence. Further, if they engage in any criminal activity while they’re on the property, like taking scrap metal or damaging things, they are subject to arrest for criminal offences. Four people have been arrested so far.
