School board software ‘PowerSchool’ sees national data breach
There has been a data breach involving software used to store student information at school boards across the country.
The U.S.-based program PowerSchool notified the Toronto District School Board Tuesday that they had a data breach between Dec. 22 to 28 in 2024.
The application is used by the Toronto school board and many school boards across North America to store “a range of student information and a limited amount of school-based staff information.”
The U.S. based provider of the cloud software says it has taken “all the appropriate steps” to prevent further unauthorized access or misuse of the affected data.
Toronto, Peel and Durham school boards have issued notices about the incident.
Boards in Halton and Hamilton also use the software.
PowerSchool says the incident is contained and it does not anticipate the data will be shared or made public.
