Officials confirmed in a press conference Wednesday that a 40-year-old Hamilton man known to police had been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with a recent homicide.

Emergency crews were called around 9:30 p.m. Saturday to 36 Queen St. South for a report of a medical incident.

Officers say David Fugler was found unconscious in his room and was taken to hospital, where he died early the next morning.

The results of an autopsy conducted Monday led police to determine that his death was a homicide.

On Tuesday, police arrested Hemraj Lakhan.

Det. Sgt. Sara Beck said Lakhan had been Fugler’s roommate for a number of months.

A search warrant was executed at the care home both men were living in.

According to police, the facility is staffed at all hours.

Beck said an altercation occurred between the two roommates, which ultimately led to Fugler’s death. There were no known issues between them prior to this incident.

Beck also said while police are not disclosing the exact cause of death at this time, mental health is a factor at play in this case.

Police are not seeking any additional suspects, and Beck said the investigation is considered closed.
