Construction on Dartnall between Stone Church and Rymal is having a big impact on the local businesses. This project will cost $5.2 million and will take at least the next 4 months to complete.
“We are reconstructing Dartnall to a 5 lane cross section, two lanes in each direction with a centre left turning lane. There will be sidewalks on the west side. We are also upgrading the water main.” Marco Oddi, City of Hamilton.
While the road is still open to local traffic, customers are having a difficult time getting to the businesses on the road.
President of Ferrell Builders Steel on the street says the portion of Dartnall in front of his business, which is closer to Rymal, doesn’t need to be closed right now because construction is currently only happening near Stone Church about 500 metres away.
The City of Hamilton says construction on this section in front of Ferrell Builders Steel was supposed to begin this week, but had to be pushed back to next week due to crew scheduling. Either way the city says it was just safer to have these road blocks preventing people from accessing the construction zone from Rymal.
Right next door another business is struggling. The Home Hardware only has employee vehicles in the parking lot. The manager says these past few days have been very slow.
The President of Ferrell says business has gone down by 35% over the last 3 days as they are a company that relies heavily on deliveries.
