Road closures in effect after multiple alarm structure fire in Hamilton

A multiple alarm structure fire causes road closures in the area of Barton St. early Monday morning.

The Hamilton Fire Department says 11 units were called to an apartment structure fire on Barton st. at around 4:45 a.m. Roads on Minto and Birch avenues are expected to be closed for several hours.

Emergency crews say the apartment building is currently under renovation and no one was reported to be inside.

The fire started on the second and third floor of the apartment with heavy smoke, which then traveled into the attic and onto the roof of the building.

Some neighbouring buildings have been evacuated and HSR buses are currently on scene to provide shelter.

Hamilton police say no injuries were reported.

Fire has been contained but crews will remain on scene for some time to determine what caused the fire and how much damage was done.

No cause or damage estimate is available at this time and the Office of the Fire Marshal is being notified.
