A former Niagara Falls historian is being honoured with one of Canada’s highest volunteer awards this week after over two decades of volunteering.
Sherman Zavitz will receive the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers at a ceremony Thursday at Rideau Hall.
The award, presented by the governor general, recognizes outstanding community service.
Zavitz served as the official historian for Niagara Falls and Niagara Parks for 25 years before retiring in 2019.
For many years, he helped answer viewer questions on CHCH in Fred Anderton’s “You Asked” segments.
Zavitz has also written several illustrated books about Niagara Falls, including “It Happened at Niagara – Stories from Niagara’s Fascinating Past”, and “Then & Now: Niagara Falls.”
