Retired judge to head inquiry

Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair has announced the new head of the use of force review, which was brought on by the shooting death of Sammy Yatim.

“Today (Friday), I am pleased to announce that retired Supreme Court of Canada Justice, the Honourable Frank Iacobucci has agreed to conduct our internal review.”

Blair praised Iacobucci for his distinguished record, and said he’s more than capable of taking over the review, after Dennis O’Connor announced he was pulling out, over a conflict of interest.

Chief Bill Blair is mandated under the Police Services Act to conduct a review in the death of Yatim, because the Special Investigations Unit is involved.

The 18-year old died last month, after being shot by police on an empty streetcar. But Blair said his review would cover several other fatal police shootings in recent years.
