One resident is unaccounted for following a house fire on Quebec Street between Brampton Street and Rennie Street.

Hamilton firefighters arrived to the single-story house just after 8:00 a.m. to heavy smoke and flame coming from the basement. Crews say that a resident who was able to get out of the house told them that there was another occupant in the basement.

Crews performed a coordinated a search and rescue but due to heavy fire volume, floor collapse, and deteriorating conditions, they had to withdraw. A defensive attack was then performed on the house until the main body of fire was extinguished.

Firefighters are currently on scene dealing with hot spots and trying to make their way to the basement through the broken floors and walls. The Ontario Fire Marshal has also been called to the scene.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and crews can not confirm the resident was in the home.
