Thanksgiving traditions go beyond the dinner table, and for many families in the region, that means a trip to a fall fair.

At the historic Ball’s Falls in Lincoln, the local artisans and vendors are part of the Thanksgiving tradition.

From handmade jewelry to local art and crafts, there’s plenty to shop for.

Alicia Powell says a portion of every admission ticket goes towards a great cause.

“… children’s outdoor education, tree planting, the restoration of some of our heritage buildings and spaces here that are surrounding us at Ball’s Falls … all goes back to the amazing conservation efforts of natural and cultural heritage here within the Niagara Peninsula watershed,” says the manager of the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority.

For the people behind the booths, it’s a chance to share local products with the community, many returning each year.

“We’ve been here about 10 years, we come back because the people are great, it’s a great atmosphere, we have some great vendors and it’s just a great time having fun sharing our product,” says Jeremi St. Denis of King’s Court Estate Winery.

From livestock shows to midway rides and live entertainment, the Norfolk County Fair has something for everyone. But for some, it’s all about the food.

“The tornado potato, it’s one of my favorites,” says a young fairgoer.

One longtime favourite is the Dixie Dog, served by the Simcoe Lions Club.

Doug Hunt is the chairman of the Dixie Dog trailer. He says sales help support the local community.

“The Dixie Dog has been with our trailer probably for 60 years, it’s a wiener just stuck in batter and fried and it’s a big, big hit. Money goes to the community, goes to hospital, goes to minor sports. We buy guide dogs,” says Hunt.

People come to fairs for all kinds of reasons. At the Rockton World’s Fair, many say it’s the rides that keep them coming back each year.

While each fair has plenty to offer, they all have one thing in common: bringing people together across the region this Thanksgiving.
