Red Hill Valley Pkwy. reopens after extensive cleanup and repairs

The Red Hill Valley Parkway has now reopened after a transport truck flipped onto its side and sent 30,000 litres of liquid asphalt pouring onto the roadway.

The truck was travelling northbound on the parkway just after 4:30 a.m. Thursday when it struck the King St. overpass abutment and rolled over.

Police say the truck was carrying a load of liquid asphalt which spilled onto the northbound and southbound lanes of the parkway as well as the grassy median under the overpass.

The truck driver and a passenger were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The city of Hamilton, Hamilton Fire Department and the Ministry of Environment are on scene and have begun the clean-up process.

Hamilton police continue to investigate the cause of the collision. They say no charges have been laid at this time.

The parkway remains shutdown from Barton St. to Stone Church Rd. Drivers traveling eastbound on the Lincoln Alexander Parkway are being forced off at the Mud St. and Upper Red Hill Valley Pkwy. exit.

The closure will be in affect for several hours.

Police say commuters should expect major delays and take alternate routes.
