Community rallies in St. Catharines following Welland child sexual assault

The accused, 25-year-old Daniel Senecal – a registered sex offender – appeared for a virtual bail hearing Wednesday that was adjourned to a later date.
Senecal is facing charges related to the sexual assault of a young girl during a break-in at a home in Welland.
Outside the courtroom, a large number of people gathered calling for changes to the criminal justice system.
“We’re going to ensure there is bail reform, and we’re going to ensure the perpetrator is labeled a dangerous offender,” said one speaker at the protest.
“I believe the law enforcement, the police themselves are doing what they can, but I believe the justice system isn’t doing enough,” said one attendee.

“Being a victim, I need to show support because there’s not only been many, but there’s going to be many if the laws don’t change,” said another attendee.
Niagara’s police chief warned of misinformation being shared online and urged the public to rely on verified sources.
The rally was a highly emotional environment. Some people were saddened and crying, while others were angry and frustrated. Everyone at the gathering wants changes to the justice system.
“You know I’m a father of three children – it’s something I can’t fathom. It just goes beyond belief,” said Welland mayor Frank Campion.
Campion says he is in talks with the different levels of government to try and spark change.
“The sentencing should be severe, it should be long, and it should be meaningful. You don’t get probation. There is going to be no probation for sexual predators,” said Campion.
Niagara police say the girl, who is under the age of five, suffered serious injuries during the attack.
The accused is a registered sex offender.
