Rally being held at St. Catharines following child sexual assault in Welland

A 25-year-old man, charged in the sexual assault of a young girl during a break-in at a home in Welland, is set to appear in a St. Catharines courthouse Wednesday morning.
A rally is planned outside the courthouse and Niagara police say there will be a heavy presence in the area.
Niagara Regional Police Services posted on X at around 3 p.m. Tuesday saying, “if you plan to attend, you have the right to protest peacefully.”

Officers are asking attendees to keep emergency routes clear and to be respectful of police and each other.
Niagara Police say the girl, who is under the age of five, suffered serious injuries during the attack.
The accused is a registered sex offender.
