Railway involved in Lac-Megantic crash allowed to operate

The Canada Transportation Agency has decided to let the railway involved in the Lac-Megantic explosion continue to operate into the new year.

The agency will allow the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway to run until February first.

This decision extends the company’s certificate of fitness while courts oversee the a sale process that should be concluded by December.

It says the railway’s total traffic since the crash has been reduced by 70%.

Earlier this week, Transport Canada disallowed the track that runs from Sherbrook, Quebec to Lac-Megantic from reopening.

The stretch hasn’t been used since the July derailment that killed 47 people.
