Possible overdose at Hamilton’s jail

There may have been another drug overdose at the jail on Barton street in Hamilton.

Paramedics were called to the Hamilton Wentworth Detention centre just before two this afternoon, for a male inmate in his twenties who had no vital signs.

The prisoner was in critical condition when he arrived at hospital. Paramedic Superintendent David Thompson says he had no signs of trauma.

Just yesterday, crosses were planted at the jail by the families of 15 inmates who died of overdoses at the facility since 2012.

They say they are still waiting to hear how the province will act on 62 recommendations made by a coroner’s jury last year after an extensive inquest that looked into the extraordinary numbers of drug deaths at the jail.

Paramedics have been called to the jail 59 times since the beginning of the year. Supporters have been at the jail protesting many times and plan to take their concerns to Queens Park on May 6th.
