Port Colborne man dies from overnight pedestrian hit-and-run

Niagara police are investigating a hit and run in Port Colborne that killed a fifty-one-year-old Port Colborne man Sunday morning.

The vehicle reported to be involved in the incident is a black 2006-2010 Jeep Commander.

Police were called out at around 4:30 a.m. to Silver Bay Road for a report of a pedestrian having been struck near the Friendship Trail, a 16-km trail that runs parallel to Lake Erie.

The man was found by police in critical condition and died despite lifesaving efforts being administered at the scene.

The victim had been walking southbound on the east side of Silver Bay Road (south of the Friendship Trail) at approximately 10:50 p.m. on Saturday.

When the man did not return home his family members started searching the area and found him injured in the ditch Sunday morning on the east side of Silver Bay Road.

The family of the victim has requested that his identity not be released.

Damaged car parts were strewn about the scene and near the victim. According to police the suspect vehicle will be missing the left-front fender flare and the left-front fender liner and will have headlight damage.

Anyone who knows of a black 2006-2010 Jeep Commander sport-utility vehicle that may have been in the area is asked to contact the police.

Additionally, anyone with information or video footage with possible images of the incident is asked to contact detectives at 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1009367.

Silver Bay Road south of the Friendship Trail was closed Sunday morning for the investigation.
