The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is urging the public to take extra precaution around the water during Pottahawk Sunday this weekend.

Every year the OPP responds to incidents at Pottohawk Point, Lake Erie that involve injuries and impaired boaters. Many of the incidents are alcohol related.

The police say they will be conducting random vessel checks throughout the day to ensure required safety equipment is on board.

There will also be patrols on highways and roadways monitoring safety.

Those attending the event this weekend are being advised to:

  • Wear a life jacket while boating
  • Not operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Conduct a pre-departure checklist for all required safety equipment
  • Check the weather forecast before leaving the dock
  • Let someone know your destination and when you plan to return
  • Have access to some type of communication throughout the day
  • Always carry your Pleasure Craft Operator Card with you
