Niagara police are searching for a second suspect believed to have been involved in an early morning stabbing in St. Catharines on Sunday.

Officers say the stabbing happened at 4:20 a.m. near Niagara and Queenston streets in the city’s downtown core.

Detectives recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack and arrested 48-year-old Mark Fromanek of no fixed address on Thursday.

Fromanek faces four charges, including attempted murder, and remains in custody until a bail hearing Friday.

Investigators are now looking to identify a second man who allegedly stole from the victim after he had been stabbed.

That man did not provide aid to the victim, nor did he call for help.

Instead, that male allegedly stole the victim’s cellphone from his backpack while he suffered from his injuries.

The man who police say is responsible for the theft is described as a white man between 25 and 35 years old on a bike.

He was wearing black pants with a white logo on the left leg and his hat was worn backwards.

Police are appealing for the man to come forward or anyone with information about his identity, to contact investigators at (905) 688-4111, dial option 3, ext. 1009222.

Members of the community who wish to provide information anonymously can contact Crime Stoppers of Niagara online or by calling 1-800-222-8477.

Meanwhile, the victim’s condition has improved and is expected to make a full recovery.
