Officers have recovered the body of a 27-year-old Toronto man who disappeared into the Niagara River earlier this month after trying to help a friend who was struggling in the water.
Police say the man’s body was discovered by a member of the public who was fishing on a boat in Lake Ontario shortly before 6 p.m. on Aug. 5.
Members of the Canadian Coast Guard and the Niagara Regional Police Service Marine Unit responded to the location which was roughly ten kilometres north of Niagara-on-the-Lake between the Welland Canal and the Niagara River.
A post-mortem was conducted at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto and confirmed the man’s identity.
Police say they will not be releasing the identity of the man or the 22-year-old woman who died in hospital after being pulled from the water in critical condition on Aug. 1.
The pair had entered the waters while out for a hike with a group of friends from Toronto.
Detectives say there is no evidence to support foul play in the deaths.
