Police probes arrest over 40 gang members

A violent feud between two rival gangs in Toronto has led to a police crackdown resulting in more than 40 arrests and hundreds of charges.

Staff inspector Greg McLane of the Homicide Squad says two police probes, Project Brazen and Project Quell, came as a response to violent gang activity that began in late 2011.

McLane says the murder of 24-year-old D’mitre Barnaby in December 2011, which police later determined to be a case of mistaken identity, and several attempted murders in Toronto’s east end prompted them to launch Project Brazen.

McLane says the murder of Barnaby, who was shot multiple times in a parking lot, remains unsolved and he was not believed to be a gang member.

Project Brazen and Project Quell have led to the arrests of 41 people alleged to be gang members.
