The trial for 4 Hamilton police officers from the Action and Mounted units who were charged with falsifying tickets in 2014 began this week. Constables Bhupesh Gulati, Shawn Smith, Stephen Travale and Daniel Williams have each been charged with obstructing justice between April 1st and October 1st in 2014. Each officer was also charged with fabricating between two and six tickets to which each pleaded not guilty to.
In court on Monday, an officer testified it is common practice for action officers to hand an offender the green portion of a carbon copy ticket called a provincial offence notice but the issue in this trial includes times when one of the accused officers allegedly didn’t hand the green portion to the offender but counted the ticket toward their goal. On Tuesday, Sgt. Michael Dunham, who was acting in charge of the action team in 2014 testified officers have a goal of about 100 tickets per officer per year.
The trial continues Thursday.
