Police lay more charges as they investigate chemicals found near Western University

Police say they have laid additional charges against four people arrested late last month after hazardous chemicals that could be used to make explosives were found in a home near Western University.

Police in London, Ont., say the new charges come after officers carried out a number of search warrants, including some in Ottawa and nearby Gatineau, Que.

The four suspects, who remain in custody, are now also jointly charged with several weapons-related offences.

The investigation began in the early hours of Jan. 24, when officers say they were called to help campus police with a trespasser in custody.

Police say a loaded handgun was found at the scene of the arrest.

They say officers linked a second suspect to the trespassing and further investigation then led them to a nearby home where they discovered the chemicals, resulting in two more arrests.

At the time, police said Jerry Tong, a 27-year-old from Ottawa, faced several weapons charges, while he and Zekun Wang, a 26-year-old from London, each faced one count of break and enter with intent and occupying a motor vehicle with a firearm.

The two remaining suspects — Fei (Frank) Han, 25, and Feiyang (Astrid) Ji, 21, both from London — were charged with unlawful possession of explosives.

Days later, police said they were charging Tong and Wang with one count each of unlawful possession of explosives.

London police said Tuesday that all roads in the area have reopened, but noted officers will remain in the area for an undetermined period of time as the investigation continues.
