Two men are in hospital following two separate shootings in Hamilton’s east end overnight.

Police were called to a home on Avondale St. near Barton St. around 10:30 p.m. Thursday for reports of a break in.

When officers arrived, they say a 65-year-old man exited the home with his hands in the air and said, “I’m the shooter”. He was arrested and is facing multiple charges including aggravated assault, and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Officers who were at a local hospital for an unrelated matter saw a man walk in to the emergency room and tell the staff he had been shot. The officers went over and questioned the 24 year old and found out that he was in fact the victim who was shot at the Avondale address while attempting to break in.

He has been arrested and charges are pending.

Just a few hours later, a 20-year-old man was shot in the back in a drive-by shooting on Sherman Ave. North.

Police say the victim and a group of friends were standing outside when a vehicle approached them. A person inside the vehicle yelled something at the group and a shot was fired. The car fled north on Sherman Ave. East.

The victim was taken to hospital and is in stable condition. Investigators say they will be canvassing the area throughout the day and are hoping to speak with witnesses.

Police are still investigating but say they do not believe the shootings are connected.
