After 14 years, the Juno Awards are coming back to the hammer. And that will mean big things for the city.
The first four acts were announced today.
The Junos will be held here at First Ontario Centre on March 15th.
This will be the 6th time Hamilton has hosted the awards.
It’ll be a week-long event with lots to look forward to including several free concerts.
Shawn Mendes, Magic, Kiesza and Hedley are the first four acts to be announced.
Tim Potocic of Sonic Unyon Records: “It’s going to be (expletive deleted) amazing.”
And the hammer is excited.
Potocic: “It’s the perfect time for the Junos to be back in Hamilton because the industry itself here, the artists here, they are ready.”
Allan Reid, Juno Awards CEO: “There’s an energy happening in the city right now.”
And you could feel that energy at the announcement at the Catherine North recording studios
Reid: “From Daniel Lanois to Teenage Head, new bands like the Arkells and Monster Truck, it’s a great community and there’s an amazing rebirth happening in Hamilton right now too. You can see it in the arts and culture. There’s 100 thousand people that come out for Supercrawl in the city and to see that energy for music in this community, that’s exciting for us.”
It’s also exciting for the city of Hamilton says mayor-elect Fred Eisenberger: “When the event is on, the restaurants, the hotels, the bars will be full. There is going to be a lot of activity in Hamilton. It’s approximately a 10 million dollar economic benefit for our city.”
It’ll be a full week of music events in Hamilton starting March 9th including pop up concerts throughout the city with about 50 different artists.
Reid: “So these things are just going to happen randomly. No one is going to know when they are happening until literally the day they are happening, so we are looking at getting superstar acts to appear in our city in places that would be unorthodox for them to do a short set to help promote the Junos.
Juno week runs from March 9th to 15th. Tickets for the Juno awards go on sale Friday morning at 10; there will be lots of free events as well.
CHCH CH-CHing members can get in on a special, pre-sale offer for the Juno awards.
