Penguin Living launches accessible housing initiative in Hamilton

A new accessible housing initiative launched in Hamilton Thursday that aims to offer affordable homes for seniors and disabled individuals.

Penguin Living, a Toronto-based company, is bringing their goal of creating local options in thoughtfully designed homes to Hamilton with the latest slate of homes.

The company purchased and converted existing homes in the area to exceed Canada’s accessibility requirements to support community members with physical, cognitive, visual and dexterity challenges.

Penguin Living says its core mission is to improve living standards for disabled and senior Canadians, “offering a new genre of independent living that does not feel clinical, institutional, or lacking in personality.”

Founder and CEO Guy Solomon spoke on the company’s endeavors in the city saying, “”Seniors and disabled individuals should not have to settle for cookie-cutter homes adapted to meet the most basic physical needs.”

“Our accessible housing options allow residents to age in place independently, in an environment they can be proud of, and with the people they choose.”

The homes will feature vital, accessible design elements such as ramps and elevators, wheel-under countertops, high contrast colour changes and Braille integrated kitchen appliances among others.

The project is serving as a manner “redefining neighborhoods” while serving a growing number of Canadians with “unique housing needs.”
