Pedestrian fatally struck by vehicle in St. Catharines: police
Niagara police have launched an investigation after a pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle in St. Catharines on Thursday evening.
Emergency responders were called to the intersection of Welland Avenue and Vine Street South for reports of a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a van around 7 p.m.
Police say a man in his 30’s was struck by an eastbound grey Toyota Sienna van while he was “in the roadway.” As a result of his injuries, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators say the driver, a 71-year-old man from St. Catharines remained on scene and is cooperating with officers.
The affected intersection remained closed for the duration of the on-scene investigation but has since re-opened.
Detectives from the region’s collision reconstruction unit and forensics services unit continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the collision.
