Ouija is a supernatural thriller directed by Stiles White, who is making his directorial debut. The film, which spent a long time in development and was once planned to have a Pirates of the Caribbean sized budget, is one of a series of films based on Hasbro properties and is produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes company. Ouija features a young cast starring Olivia Cooke, Douglas Smith, Ana Coto, and Daren Kagasoff.

After Laine’s childhood friend, Debbie, suddenly dies, Laine, alongside Debbie’s boyfriend, Pete, discovers an antique Ouija board in Debbie’s room and tries to use it to say “Goodbye” to her best friend. When the curious teen begins asking questions and stumbles upon the mystery of Debbie’s death, Laine discovers that the board’s resident spirit calls itself DZ and doesn’t want these sessions to end.

You wouldn’t think there would be much potential for a film based off of the ouija board, but Stephen Davis, Hasbro Studios’ president, thought otherwise. “The Ouija brand offers great storytelling power that we knew would be very compelling when translated on the big screen. We worked closely with Universal Pictures, Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse Productions to bring the lore of the Ouija game to life and make it central to the storyline.”

Ouija is rated 14A.
