Thousands converged on Parliament Hill in Ottawa

It’s the second-day thousands gathered on Parliament Hill in Ottawa to protest government mandates.

The group that organized the rally spoke to the crowds while supporters – who are protesting COVID-19 mandates and restrictions – chanted “freedom” on Parliament Hill.

What started out as a cross-country convoy to denounce mandatory vaccination for truckers has turned into a larger movement.

Protesters chanted, “We’re not leaving until you can open up your businesses. Not leaving until you can hug your best friend. Not leaving until you can see your parents in a long-term care facility. We are not leaving until all of you and all of your kids are free.”

Speakers are encouraging protestors to remain peaceful and Ottawa police say they have been, but there are a few criminal investigations underway.

Ottawa police say they are looking into some threats as well as the interference with national monuments.

“Our statues and memorials are not to be touched. They’re considered sacred. It’s holy ground. Especially the tomb of the unknown soldier. It represents what people have sacrificed so we can have our freedom. Desecrating it by stepping on it putting objects is really a mockery of that sacrifice,” said Amy Gangon of the Ottawa Police Services.

Protestors say they won’t be leaving anytime soon. Police are working on planning a route for those who do choose to leave Sunday night.
