Ontario is allowing residents to fish for free across the province this weekend in celebration of Mother’s Day on May 14.

Normally, most people need to have an Ontario Outdoors Card as well as a fishing license in order to catch fish in the province.

Natural Resources and Forestry Minister Graydon Smith said this is an opportunity for families to bond.

“This is a fantastic way for families to get out and enjoy one of Ontario’s greatest natural resources – our beautiful lakes, rivers and streams,” Smith said.

Licensed individuals reportedly spend $1.75 billion each year on recreational fishing in Ontario.

The next opportunity for free fishing is not until next month, on June 17 and 18, in celebration of Father’s Day weekend.
