Ontario will spend $50 million a year to expand coverage of In Vitro Fertilization to help about 4 thousand parents grow their families. Starting this December one round of IVF will be covered for those eligible patients. Currently Ontario only funds IVF treatments for women with blocked fallopian tubes but the province will fund one IVF cycle per patient in their lifetime, which includes egg retrieval and surgical sperm retrieval.

The funding will cover a one-at-a-time transfer of a viable embryo to reduce the chances of higher-risk multiple births.

It costs upwards of $10 thousand for one round of IVF treatment. The cost for many is just too much. But with this latest announcement, many more Ontario families will be able to have their own little miracle babies.

The Johnson’s have spent over 6 years trying to have a baby before finally turning to IVF. The whole process cost them $30 thousand. “For us going forward with the treatments without a financial burden is a huge life changing opportunity and it will transform our family.” Now, they are trying to have have a second child. “We’ve been trying for a while again but unfortunately we have had some loss and had some transfers that were not successful so for us we are looking at another IVF cycle.”

A cycle that will now be covered by OHIP. One in 6 Ontario couples is affected by infertility at some point in their lives.
