A 27-year-old Milton man was killed and 14 others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Mississauga.

Emergency crews were called to a five-car pileup in the Toronto-bound lanes of the 401 at Winston Churchill Blvd around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CHCH that several family members of the man killed were also involved in the crash and called the scene “unbelievably tragic”.

A passenger in the vehicle with the man killed is in serious condition.

Police say speeding was not a factor but the collision happened at a high-speed. Schmidt said distracted driving has not been ruled out as a cause.

The Toronto-bound lanes were closed for roughly 6 hours while reconstruction teams tried to figure out what happened.

All lanes have since been reopened and police continue to investigate a cause.
