Jack Kukolic, 19, is aspiring to become the next mayor of Oakville, but he has to beat the town’s long-term mayor, Rob Burton and a determined restaurateur.

Kukolic says his biggest motivation to run is because of low-voter turnout in the last election, especially with younger people.

He spends his time running a photography and videography company that he started when he was 14-years-old, along with attending Sheridan College where he studied film. He has also had a passion for politics from childhood.

Kukolic says his priorities as mayor would be to improve transit service and address the housing crisis. His full platform will be released this week.

Julia Hanna is also running for mayor. She’s a veteran Oakville restaurant owner, who has also hosted her own cooking show. She says she is running because it’s time for new approaches and a change in the mayor’s office because the world is different than it was four years ago.

Meanwhile, Rob Burton has been the mayor of Oakville since 2006 and if re-elected, this will be his fifth term.

Voters will go to the polls on October 24.
