Oakville man arrested for defrauding senior out of $60,000

A 56-year-old Oakville man has been arrested and charged after allegedly defrauding a senior woman out of $60,000.

Halton police say an investigation began in 2022 when family members became aware of concerning financial transactions being made by the victim, who lives alone and is considered vulnerable.

The investigation revealed that the victim had lost approximately $60,000 over the course of three years through a series of transactions to a man who had befriended her.

On Saturday, police arrested 56-year-old Bud Walker of Oakville and charged him with three counts of fraud over $5,000.

Investigators say they are concerned there may be additional victims, and anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police at 905-825-4777 ext. 2216.

Halton police say resources are available to help ensure the safety of our community’s seniors.

“We encourage seniors in our community, and their loved ones, to contact police if elder abuse is occurring or there is a safety concern that requires police assistance,” Halton police say.

They say the following signs and symptoms may be a sign of elder abuse:

  • Unexplained injuries
  • Fear, uneasiness
  • Depression
  • Withdrawal or passivity
  • Poor hygiene
  • Poor nutrition
  • Missing personal belongings
  • Lack of food, clothing, or other necessities
  • Unusual bank withdrawals
  • Unusual legal activity related to wills or other documents
