Northern Soul is a British drama written and directed by Elaine Constantine, her first full length feature film. It was selected as part of the City to City Programme at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The film stars Josh Whitehouse, Elliot James Langridge, Antonia Thomas, Steve Coogan, and James Lance.
In the 1970s, a form of dance music took a feverish hold on the UK, finding its heart in the north of England. The music of 1960s-70s American soul singers combined with distinctive dance styles to create what became known as northern soul. The movement tapped into a yearning for individual expression in northern working-class teenagers. No longer satisfied with the prospect of a dead-end factory job, John and Matt dream of finding the American soul record which will make them famous DJs. This is the story of a youth culture that changed a generation and exploded into a cultural phenomenon which influenced songwriters, producers, DJs and designers for decades to come. Northern Soul fought off some stiff competition at the NME Awards earlier this year, beating big movies like Boyhood, Frank, and Get On Up to win the Best Film award.
