Dozens of firefighters are battling a massive house fire on Stoney Creek Mountain Tuesday afternoon.

The blaze broke out shortly after 3 p.m. in the one-storey home located at 1043 Highland Rd. East between 9th and 10th roads.

Crews arrived to find the home engulfed in flames, but fortunately the only person inside of the home escaped. No injuries have been reported at this time.

“As firefighters were in the process of advancing hose lines for firefighting operations, portions of the roof began to collapse,” Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe writes in a media release.

He says fire crews were then instructed to battle the blaze from the outside of the home.

At the height of the fire, nearly 45 firefighters were at the scene with 14 apparatus. Additional tankers were called in to bring more water since there are no fire hydrants nearby.

Cunliffe says the main body of the fire has been extinguished. Police have closed Highland Road East between 9th and 10th roads as firefighters continue to put out hotspots.

The estimated cost of damages is between $1.5 to $1.7 million.

“The house has sustained significant damage and is expected to be a total loss,” Cunliffe says.

“Three vehicles were also lost in the fire.”

Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified.
