Niagara women sentenced to 5 years for drunk driving causing death

A Niagara woman has been sentenced to five years in prison following a horrific drunk driving crash that left one young woman dead and two others seriously injured. For the family and friends of 23-year-old Jessica Edwards, today’s sentence brings a sense of closure to a painful and public chapter.
“It didn’t matter what he gave her, we still lost a daughter.” “The sentence itself was fair, the judge was fair. Took into both consideration our family and her children.” Robin Edwards, Jessica’s father.
The court heard that Kimberly Servos, a 33-year-old mother of four, blew through a stop sign while driving 20 kilometres over the speed limit and intoxicated crashing into an Uber that was carrying Edwards and three of her friends in February of last year.
The judge noted what he called the “heartbreaking irony” of the situation. The 4 young women had hired an Uber that night because they didn’t want to drink and drive. The crown had asked for a sentence of 5-7 years, while the defense argued for 3-4 years.
With credit for time served, Servos will spend 4 years and 6 months in jail going forward and when she’s released she’ll be banned from driving for 10 years.
For the Edward’s family there is at least a small silver lining, Jessica was an organ donor. “She saved 5 other people’s lives and gave eye sight to two other people.”
With hopes that one day they’ll be able to meet the people whose lives she saved.
